Day 5 -Canadian, eh? ( Pembroke to Sault Ste. Marie)

Today we got up at the crack of dawn (well, not quite, but it sounds good), said a quick goodbye to Jeanne and Perry, and started on our way. Not too far - we got a call from Jeanne saying I had forgotten my camera and Perry was chasing us down! So we pulled over, the camera exchanged vehicles and we were back on the road again.

The trip was rather uninspiring - rain, construction, and where there weren't repairs being made their should have been. Our clean, shiny truck is looking like it did before!

By the time we arrived in Sault Ste. Marie the sun was shining again. We pulled into a campground right on Lake Huron (Bell's Point Marina), beautiful spot, set up, and went exploring.

We walked along the waterfront, and then to an art gallery before driving to the lock. There is a walkway for a good distance along the waterfront, but it was too windy to walk as far as we would have liked. Sault Ste. Marie is famous for its lock - when it was built, it was the largest in the world, also the first to be built with hydro-electric power. Plus it was entirely designed and built by Canadians. Not bad, eh? Although now it is only used for pleasure craft, it is still an impressive site. The buildings that once housed the lockmaster, a blacksmith and maintenance shop (the Soo was more of an outpost in those days, and the lock and its operations had to be self contained) were well built and have been kept in good repair.

Back to the trailer for a late supper, some routine trailer stuff, catching up on email - there is WiFi here! - showers and bed. Does carrying the garbage out to the gate count as a hike? It's a large park........
